Custom-made wigs destined for cancer patients are among around $50,000 worth of stock stolen during a brazen early-morning break-in at a hairdressing salon on Salmon Street in Port Melbourne on Wednesday.
Security footage captured a masked offender entering the premises while loud alarms sounded — and deliberately bypassing the cash register to head straight for the salon's stock. Wigs and styling tools were stuffed into a bag before the thieves made their escape.
Cancer Patients Among Those Left Without Their Wigs
In what many would describe as a particularly callous act, some of the stolen hairpieces had been custom-made for clients undergoing cancer treatment — people who rely on quality wigs to help maintain their dignity and sense of self through a difficult time. For those already dealing with the devastating impact of a cancer diagnosis, the loss adds an unwanted burden.
Victoria Police confirmed that two laptops were also taken during the Port Melbourne raid.
Second Salon Hit Within Half an Hour
It is understood the same offenders then struck again, targeting a salon on Clarendon Street in South Melbourne approximately 30 minutes after the first break-in. Hair extensions, styling tools, products, cash and a stereo were among the items reported stolen from that premises.
Police are continuing to investigate both incidents and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
