Sydney businessman Alexander Csergo has been sentenced to jail after being found to have worked on behalf of suspected Chinese intelligence operatives, in a case that has exposed a significant foreign interference operation on Australian soil.
The Australian Federal Police uncovered a telling piece of evidence during a search of Csergo's Bondi apartment — a so-called "shopping list" of data requests, understood to have originated from China, detailing specific information he had been tasked with obtaining.
The discovery pointed to Csergo acting as a conduit for suspected Chinese spies, gathering intelligence at their direction. The case highlights growing concerns among Australian security agencies about foreign interference efforts targeting individuals within the country's business community.
