A school bus has been completely destroyed by fire in Perth's northern suburbs after it burst into flames while on its way to collect students for an excursion, in a frightening incident that unfolded just after 9am on Thursday.
The bus was heading to Ballajura Community College to pick up children when it caught alight on Illawarra Crescent. Security footage captured the alarming moment the driver pulled over and leapt from the vehicle in an attempt to bring the blaze under control — but the fire proved far too intense to fight.
Fortunately, the driver escaped without injury, and no students were on board at the time.
Driver Helpless as Fire Tore Through the Vehicle
Footage from a nearby security camera recorded the full sequence of events, showing the driver pulling the bus to a stop as thick smoke and flames took hold. He jumped out and made an attempt to extinguish the fire, but the blaze was already well beyond control.
By the time the fire was out, very little of the bus remained intact. The seats, steering wheel and roof were all destroyed in the intense heat, leaving a gutted shell where the vehicle once stood.
A witness nearby described watching the scene unfold with alarm. "It was just a lot of smoke and fire happening and my mum called us, telling us that it was happening," the witness said, adding: "I hope there's no one in there that got burned or anything."
