Three limited-edition $2 coins honouring the 2026 Commonwealth Games are set to enter circulation through a uniquely grassroots channel — Woolworths supermarket change — with the first batch hitting registers from Wednesday, July 15. Pressed by the Royal Australian Mint in a special collaboration with the supermarket giant, the coins mark only the third time the two organisations have partnered on a Commonwealth Games coin program.

Three sports, three separate releases

Each coin in the series spotlights a different sport and is rolled out in weekly batches. All three share a common design element: a green and gold star at the centrepiece, giving the collection a unified look while each coin carries its own distinct illustration.

  • From July 15 — Gymnastics: The first coin features a golden gymnast arched back in a salute over the signature star motif.
  • From July 22 — Wheelchair basketball: The second coin depicts a player with one hand on his chair's wheel and the other gripping a basketball.
  • From July 29 — Athletics: The third coin shows a runner in full stride, rounding out the trio.

The staggered release schedule means collectors will need to visit Woolworths across three separate weeks to have a chance at the full set.

The only way to get them is through the checkout

Unlike many collectible coin programs that go through the Mint's own retail channels, these $2 Commonwealth Games coins will be distributed exclusively through Woolworths cash registers — meaning shoppers must pay with cash and receive change to have a chance of scoring one. The coins will not be available for direct purchase.

Woolworths has confirmed the coins will be available at most registers while stocks last, though the company noted not every store in the network will carry them. Whether supplies will reach supermarkets in every state and territory has not been confirmed at the time of publication.

Royal Australian Mint CEO Emily Martin encouraged both everyday shoppers and dedicated coin enthusiasts to stay alert at the register. "You too might take home gold," she said, playing on both the collecting appeal and the Games themselves.

A champion's endorsement ahead of Glasgow

Olympic swimming champion Mollie O'Callaghan made a visit to Woolworths to view the coins ahead of their public release. O'Callaghan is set to headline Australia's Commonwealth Games swimming squad alongside Lani Pallister when the Games get under way.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are being held in Glasgow, with a 10-sport program scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2. Commonwealth Games Australia CEO Craig Phillips AM noted that this marks the third consecutive Commonwealth Games for which the organisation has teamed up with the Mint on a commemorative coin program, underscoring a growing tradition of numismatic celebration around the event.

What to do if you spot one

For those keen to collect the full series, the practical advice is straightforward: use cash at Woolworths from July 15 onwards, check your change carefully after each transaction, and return the following two weeks to chase the wheelchair basketball and athletics designs. Given the coins are distributed at random through normal retail change, there is no guarantee of receiving one — making each find a genuine lucky dip.
