A specially modified Qantas aircraft has landed in France after completing the longest direct flight ever attempted by a commercial aircraft, touching down on Tuesday following a marathon 24 hours and 24 minutes in the air. The Airbus A350-1000ULR departed Melbourne and covered 23,057 kilometres without a single stopover, marking a pivotal milestone in the airline's ambitious Project Sunrise program — and raising fresh questions about the future of long-haul travel.
A Record That Rewrites Aviation History
The previous world record for a direct commercial flight was held by a Boeing 777-200LR, which flew 21,601.7 kilometres from Hong Kong to London in 22 hours and 42 minutes — a record that had stood since 2005. Qantas' latest test flight has surpassed it by a considerable margin.
The flight is part of a two-month test campaign under Project Sunrise, the airline's plan to launch the world's longest commercial passenger routes, connecting Australia's east coast directly with both London and New York. Qantas has ordered 12 of the modified A350 aircraft, each equipped with an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank and configured to carry 238 passengers.
The first of these aircraft is due for delivery in April 2027, with daily non-stop flights between Sydney and London planned to begin from October of that year. A Sydney–New York route is expected to follow shortly after. To put the scale of the achievement in perspective, the same Sydney-to-London journey took five days when Qantas first flew the route — then known as the 'Kangaroo Route' — back in 1947. Under Project Sunrise, it will take between 19 and 21 hours, depending on winds and routing.
Will Stopovers Become a Thing of the Past?
The record-breaking test flight has sparked widespread speculation about whether the era of stopovers in hub cities like Singapore, Dubai or Los Angeles is coming to an end. Experts say the reality is more nuanced.
Justin Brownjohn from RMIT University's Aviation Academy argues that while non-stop routes will become increasingly viable as aircraft range improves and fuel efficiency rises, they are not a straight replacement for one-stop flying.
"Airlines have historically competed on network and frequency, but Project Sunrise competes on time," he said. "Cutting up to four hours off the journey from Sydney to London and removing the connection entirely is a different product, not an improved version of the existing one. These services won't replace one-stop flying, they'll sit alongside it."
Brownjohn expects the strongest demand for ultra-long-haul services to come from business and premium leisure travellers prepared to pay a premium for the time saved. He also notes that the wider disruption may be felt most acutely by major Middle Eastern and Asian hub airports, whose business models have been built around the international layover.
The Human Body at 20-Plus Hours in the Air
Beyond the engineering feat, the prospect of spending more than 20 continuous hours aboard an aircraft raises genuine questions about passenger health and wellbeing. Brownjohn is direct about the challenge: "Twenty hours is not a longer flight, it is a different physiological event," he said, adding that on a flight of this duration, comfort has shifted from being a luxury feature to the core product being sold.
Professor Peter Cistulli, a sleep medicine specialist at the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre, worked with Qantas on the physiological aspects of the aircraft's design. He describes Project Sunrise as pushing ultra-long-haul travel "to a whole new level" — what he calls "arguably the final frontier of travel on Earth" — and flags the biological complexity of crossing so many time zones in such a compressed period as one of the key challenges the program must address.
Australia Leading the World on Aviation Innovation
Experts suggest the success of the test program positions Australia at the forefront of next-generation commercial aviation. If Project Sunrise launches as planned in late 2027, Qantas will operate routes that no other airline currently flies — reshaping how Australians connect with the world, and potentially how the global aviation industry thinks about distance itself.
