Nick Daicos put in yet another Brownlow Medal-worthy display as an injury-depleted Collingwood survived a spirited West Coast fightback to claim a 19-point victory at Optus Stadium in Perth on Saturday, securing the Magpies a place in the AFL's new wildcard round.

In front of a crowd of 47,609, Collingwood ran out winners 17.15 (117) to 15.8 (98), lifting their season record to 12 wins, eight losses and one draw. The result came despite a courageous late surge from the Eagles that twice sliced the margin back to just 10 points in a tense final quarter.

Nick Daicos Dominates Despite Tagger Attention

Even with Eagles midfielder Brady Hough assigned specifically to curtail his influence, Nick Daicos was simply unstoppable. The Brownlow Medal favourite finished with a whopping 39 disposals, 10 clearances, 12 score involvements, 722 metres gained, two goal assists and a goal — a performance that will almost certainly add another three votes to his tally in the prestigious individual award count.

Daicos was particularly damaging in the first half, racking up 21 disposals, five clearances, a goal and a goal assist before halftime, and he kept his foot on the accelerator in the third term as Collingwood pulled away. A long bomb from the Magpies star helped spark a three-goal run that pushed the visitors into a six-point lead at the main break.

Brother Josh Daicos was equally impressive, finishing with 35 disposals and a game-high 884 metres gained, making it a dominant afternoon for the Daicos family in the engine room.

Lachie Schultz, Tim Membrey and Daniel McStay each kicked three goals for the visitors, providing strong forward-line support around the midfield's excellence.

Collingwood Held Nerve Despite Mounting Injury List

The win was all the more impressive given the number of key players unavailable for Collingwood. The Magpies entered the contest without Scott Pendlebury, Jordan De Goey, Jeremy Howe, Harry Perryman and Patrick Lipinski — all absent from the side that had lost to Geelong by 25 points the previous week.

Collingwood appeared in control after building a 34-point lead late in the third quarter, but West Coast refused to fold. The Eagles mounted two separate charges in the final term, both bringing the margin back to within 10 points, before the Magpies steadied to close out the game.

Harley Reid Fights On Despite First-Quarter Injury

West Coast's performance drew admiration despite their ninth consecutive defeat. Much of that credit belongs to young gun Harley Reid, who sustained a heavy blow to his quad in the opening quarter but battled through the painful cork to deliver a gutsy outing of 30 disposals, six clearances and a goal.

Reid was at the heart of West Coast's spirited comeback, supported admirably by Elliot Yeo, who finished with 28 disposals, 11 clearances and a goal — including a remarkable 50-metre running goal in the dying seconds of the first quarter that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Forward Jake Waterman also impressed with three goals.

The first quarter itself was an entertaining, high-scoring shootout, with both teams kicking six goals. West Coast's accuracy — returning 6.1 — was a marked improvement on recent weeks and briefly had them leading by 11 points midway through the second term before Collingwood wrestled back control.

A highlight of the second quarter was a bone-crunching but fair hit by Eagles defender Brandon Starcevich on Collingwood's Ed Allan, with both players fortunately coming through unscathed.

What the Win Means for Both Clubs

With their wildcard berth now locked in, Collingwood's finals campaign is confirmed regardless of how their remaining matches play out. The Magpies will look to rediscover full health before the postseason, with several key players potentially available to return.

For West Coast, now sitting at 4 wins and 17 losses with nine straight defeats, the focus shifts to finishing the season with the spirit and intensity they showed in Perth — even if the ladder position remains firmly at the bottom.
