An Edge Early Learning childcare centre in Gawler East, north of Adelaide, has been ordered to remain closed until at least January 20, 2027, after a young child was hospitalised following an allergic reaction to soy found in meatballs served at the facility.
What happened at the Gawler East centre
The incident occurred on July 3 when the centre had recently switched food suppliers. The new supplier's meatballs contained soy — a known allergen for one of the children in care — triggering a serious allergic reaction that required hospitalisation.
The centre was shut down just days later, on July 6, and has remained closed since. Edge Early Learning initially advised affected families the closure would extend until October, and confirmed the centre would undertake a full review of its food-handling procedures, supplier management practices, and safety protocols.

Education Standards Board extends suspension until 2027
However, the Education Standards Board (ESB) has since confirmed the closure will run significantly longer than the operator initially expected. The ESB determined that a six-month suspension of the service approval was required following its investigation into the meatball incident.
In a statement, the ESB said the suspension period would allow Edge Early Learning to carry out the necessary remediation work, and stressed that the length of the suspension reflects the seriousness of what was uncovered during the investigation.
Edge Early Learning has indicated it is writing to the Education Standards Board to seek further clarification on why the centre cannot reopen in October as originally understood. A company spokesperson said Edge would continue to support affected families throughout the closure period for as long as required.
The case highlights the critical importance of rigorous allergen management and supplier vetting within childcare settings, particularly when transitions between food providers occur. A change as routine as switching a food supplier proved to have serious consequences for at least one child in this instance.
The Gawler East centre will not be permitted to reopen before January 20, 2027, pending completion of all required remediation activities as determined by the ESB.
