The Newcastle Knights brought the Dolphins (NRL)' remarkable eight-game winning streak to a halt on Sunday afternoon, with five-eighth Dylan Brown slotting a golden field goal in wet and windy conditions at Hunter Stadium to seal a dramatic victory in Round 18.

It was a fitting end to a high-drama weekend of NRL football that also saw Parramatta stun Manly in western Sydney, the NRLW kick off its season, and the league itself make a cheeky play for the world's most famous newlyweds.

Knights Hold Nerve to Deny Depleted Dolphins

Newcastle looked set for a comfortable afternoon when they raced out to a 12-0 half-time lead, with tries to Dylan Lucas and Fletcher Hunt silencing any doubts about the hosts' ability to handle the conditions. The home crowd at Hunter Stadium was firmly behind the Knights as the rain fell and the wind swirled.

But the Dolphins refused to buckle, even as their injury and Origin absences mounted. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Selwyn Cobbo, Jack Bostock, Tom Flegler and Max Plath were all away on State of Origin duty, while halfback Isaiya Katoa and forward Ray Stone were ruled out through injury. The sheer depth of those absences blunted what is normally one of the competition's more potent attacking outfits.

The visitors finally got on the board with around 30 minutes remaining, when a sharp backline shift sent Jamayne Isaako over the tryline. Local junior Kurt Donoghoe then crossed to cut the deficit to just two points with 20 minutes left on the clock, before Isaako added a penalty goal to level the scores and set up a tense finale.

With the match perfectly poised heading into the final ten minutes, Brown stepped forward to end the contest, slotting the field goal that sent the Knights faithful into raptures and handed the Dolphins only their second defeat in nine games.

Eels Stun Manly Thanks to Pezet Heroics

Earlier on Sunday, Parramatta produced one of the performances of the round, defeating Manly 23-14 at Western Sydney Stadium in a result that will do their season-defining credentials no harm whatsoever.

Much of the credit belonged to halfback Jonah Pezet, who delivered a commanding display on his return to first-grade football. Pezet crossed for the try that effectively sealed the win and then added a late field goal to put the result beyond doubt.

The match also produced a moment of genuine brilliance from Dylan Walker, whose miracle pass created an earlier Eels four-pointer and had the crowd on its feet. Parramatta's victory was clinical, controlled and ultimately deserved — the kind of performance that suggests they are building genuine momentum heading into the back half of the season.

NRLW Season Opens with Tigers and Warriors Victories

Away from the men's competition, the NRLW got its season underway with a pair of round-one contests, and both the Tigers and the Warriors recorded opening-weekend victories. Full details of both matches are expected to be confirmed through the official score centre, with the women's competition providing an exciting complement to the men's programme across the weekend.

NRL Takes Its Shot at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce

On a lighter note, the conclusion of Round 18 provided the NRL with an irresistible opportunity to aim high on the celebrity front. Following the widely reported marriage of pop superstar Taylor Swift and NFL tight end Travis Kelce at New York City's Madison Square Garden, the league's official social media account posted a congratulatory message — and wasted no time attaching a very specific invitation.

"We looked everywhere for the wishing well … couldn't find it," the post read. "BUT, we do have tickets to Rugby League Las Vegas in February if you're looking for honeymoon plans. @tkelce you'll love it. Trust us."

The tweet was pinned to the top of the NRL's page, with replies restricted — presumably to the accounts of the happy couple themselves.

The appeal carries some logic beyond pure publicity. Kelce has fond memories of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, having helped his Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime of Super Bowl LVIII there in 2024. The NRL's Vegas double-header has form as a celebrity drawcard, though not always without incident — the last NFL player to attend the season-opener was reportedly ejected from the venue for allegedly damaging a bathroom.

The league also attracted widespread criticism in 2025 for an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to secure US President Donald Trump as a Vegas attendee.

Next year's Las Vegas fixtures will see the Parramatta Eels face the Gold Coast Titans, while the Melbourne Storm take on the Wests Tigers — with the NRL now apparently holding out hope that Swift and Kelce might add an NRL double-header to their honeymoon itinerary.

Attention now turns to Wednesday night, when the NRL season pauses for the State of Origin decider at Lang Park — a fitting crescendo to what has been a compelling Round 18 weekend.
