A 21-year-old man has been shot by police in Sydney's southwest after allegedly arriving at his partner's family home armed with a pistol and making threats, leaving him hospitalised in a serious condition.

Emergency services were called to a residence on Strathmore Place, near Mountain View Avenue in Glen Alpine, at around 12.25pm on Thursday following reports of a domestic and family violence incident.

What Happened at the Glen Alpine Home

It is understood the man himself called triple-0 before the incident, telling an emergency operator he was on his way to his girlfriend's house and allegedly making threats during that call. Officers rushed to the two-storey property shortly afterwards.

The man arrived at the home, where his partner was present at the time, shortly after police had already reached the scene. He allegedly produced a pistol and pointed it directly at officers, at which point one officer discharged a single shot, striking the man in the stomach.

Officers immediately administered first aid before paramedics arrived and took over his treatment. The man was subsequently transported to hospital in a serious condition. His partner was also taken to hospital, reported to have been in a "state of shock" following the incident.

Aerial footage from above the scene showed officers and paramedics working within a secured perimeter marked by police tape. Personal items were visible scattered across the front lawn, and two men were seen being escorted away from the property in an unmarked police vehicle.

Police Response and Senior Officers' Comments

Assistant Commissioner Stacey Maloney confirmed the man and woman were in a domestic relationship, but said police had no record of any prior domestic violence incidents or apprehended violence orders involving the couple.

Maloney said the woman had expressed gratitude for the speed of the police response, noting the gravity of the situation. "Potentially police arrived and saved this individual's life given the fact that he did have a firearm," she said.

The man was described as known to police, but only for "very minor" matters, with a limited criminal history overall.

This incident echoes broader concerns about policing and public safety in Sydney, at a time when confrontations between members of the public and police officers have drawn significant community attention across the city.

Investigation Under Way

A crime scene was established at the Strathmore Place property following the shooting. A Critical Incident Team from Burwood Police Area Command has been tasked with investigating the full circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm.

The investigation will also be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command, with oversight provided by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC), in line with standard procedure following any police shooting in New South Wales.

Local Context

The Glen Alpine property sits approximately 1.4 kilometres northwest of the location where 23-year-old Marco Tapia was allegedly shot dead in what was described as a case of mistaken identity on 1 September this year, a tragedy that drew widespread attention to the area.

Thursday's shooting adds to a series of serious incidents in Sydney's southwest, prompting renewed discussion around domestic and family violence, police use of force, and community safety. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges will be laid against the 21-year-old man, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation and his medical treatment.

Anyone experiencing domestic or family violence is encouraged to contact emergency services or reach out to relevant support services.
