The fiancé of a young Perth tow truck driver has paid a devastating tribute to his partner after finding her unresponsive at a towing yard in the early hours of Tuesday morning — revealing he desperately tried to free her before emergency services arrived. Evette Wallington, 29, died at Auto Tow Services in Osborne Park, in what those closest to her have described as a freak accident that has left family, friends and colleagues shattered.
Wallington, a mother of three daughters, is understood to have become trapped while unloading a car from a tilt tray truck at the company's yard near the intersection of Sundercombe Street and Collingwood Street. She was discovered by her fiancé and fellow driver, Cameron Christmass, at around 5.40am — having reportedly been there since the night before.
'I Tried So Hard to Save You': Cameron Christmass's Tribute to Evette Wallington
Christmass, who works at the same company, used his own truck to free Wallington after finding her, before emergency services reached the scene. Despite his efforts and those of paramedics, she could not be saved.
In a heartfelt post shared to social media, Christmass said no words could capture the depth of his grief.
"RIP to my amazing girl Evette," he wrote. "I tried so hard to save you when I found you this morning. But unfortunately you had already gained your wings. I will always love you and cherish the memories we made together. Forever in my heart baby. This isn't a goodbye but until we meet again my love."
A colleague who heard the moment Christmass raised the alarm described the scene as deeply distressing. The colleague said they heard him "literally screaming for help" over their work radio that morning, and that it took time to piece together what had happened from his broken cries.
"Our colleague Evette, who's also his partner, had an accident at our company's Osborne Park yard," the colleague said.
Christmass has since set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Wallington's family through what he called an unimaginably difficult time. He remembered her as a hardworking woman and a devoted mother, writing: "She will forever be missed and loved by many."
Colleagues and Friends Remember a Devoted Worker and Mother
Tributes have poured in from across Wallington's personal and professional life, painting a picture of a woman who gave everything to her work and her children.
One colleague recalled her dedication on the job, noting that she would often start her shifts as early as 4am. "Evette was such a dedicated and responsible person," they wrote. "In line of work, we're always on the go, day and night."
Another tribute traced her life from childhood through to motherhood: "Watching you grow up from primary school to high school, to celebrating your 18th and 21st birthday to becoming a mother — you are a beautiful human being and you are going to be sadly missed."
Auto Tow Services also released a statement expressing its grief over the loss. "This is a tragic loss for our team, she was much-loved here, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones," the company said.
