The ceremony also saw The Pitt claim the night's most prestigious prize — outstanding drama series — while Welsh actor Matthew Rhys etched his name into Emmy history by becoming the first man to win two lead acting awards in a single year.
Widow's Bay sweeps the Emmys with a perfect six from six
Creator and writer Katie Dippold accepted the outstanding comedy series trophy to close out a remarkable evening for the Apple TV+ production, which had already claimed wins in every other category it entered. The show's victories included outstanding lead comedy actor for Matthew Rhys, outstanding supporting actress in a comedy for Kate O'Flynn, outstanding supporting actor in a comedy for Stephen Root, outstanding directing for a comedy for Japanese filmmaker Hiro Murai, and outstanding writing for a comedy for Dippold herself — in addition to the eight Creative Arts Emmys the show had already secured.
Rhys plays a New England mayor attempting to revive tourism on his supposedly cursed island, and his win prompted an emotional speech crediting Dippold and director Hiro Murai. "This is purely because of the depraved and twisted mind of Katie Dippold and my hero Hiro Murai," he said. "To the great people of Wales, who were as much a nurturer as anything else, we are a small but mighty nation." His partner, Keri Russell — herself nominated for The Diplomat — was in the audience cheering him on.
O'Flynn, accepting her supporting actress award for her portrayal of the awkward but devoted mayoral assistant Patricia, described it simply as "the role of a lifetime." Stephen Root, meanwhile, paid gracious tribute to his fellow nominees — a list that included Harrison Ford — noting that his son had been thrilled to see him share a category with the Hollywood legend. "Thank you, Harrison Ford, because my son came running up to me and said, 'You're in a category with Harrison Ford!' Thank you, sir, for your many years of great, great, great, great acting," Root said.
Dippold, visibly moved when accepting the outstanding comedy series award, offered a speech that quickly became the night's most talked-about moment. "I love this group so much," she said. "We love all these other shows so much. I firstly have to quickly thank my mum for always making Halloween fun." She closed with an in-character flourish that delighted fans: "OK, serve the punch now!"
The Pitt and Pluribus share the drama honours
The Pitt, the medical drama that drew widespread acclaim during its debut season, claimed outstanding drama series despite a frustrating night in the acting categories, where its heavily nominated supporting cast came away empty-handed. The show nonetheless secured two awards on the evening.
Pluribus, also on Apple TV+, contributed further to the streamer's dominant haul. Rhea Seehorn won outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her role as Carol — described as the most miserable person on Earth, tasked with saving the world from happiness — in an emotional acceptance speech that referenced her previous nominations, including two for the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul. Seehorn thanked her fellow nominees warmly, singling out Keri Russell, who had sent her a card quoting Gloria Steinem: "We are linked not ranked." Vince Gilligan, Seehorn's former collaborator on Better Call Saul, also won the Emmy for outstanding writing for a drama series for Pluribus.
Matthew Rhys makes Emmy history; Jean Smart extends remarkable streak
The night's most historic individual achievement belonged to Rhys, who added a second lead acting Emmy to the one he claimed for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series for The Beast in Me on Netflix. No male performer had previously won two lead acting categories in the same Emmy year.
Jean Smart continued her own extraordinary run, winning outstanding lead comedy actress for Hacks — her fifth consecutive win across five seasons of the series. HBO Max also benefited from wins for DTF St Louis and Task.
Netflix's Sally Field added yet another trophy to an already overflowing cabinet, winning for the feature Remarkably Bright Creatures. Field, who holds three prior Emmy wins, two Golden Globes, a SAG Award, a lifetime achievement award, and two Academy Awards for best actress, was characteristically celebrated upon accepting.
Apple TV+ dominates the overall tally
When the final count was tallied, Apple TV+ had won nine awards across the night — six for Widow's Bay, two for Pluribus, and one for Slow Horses — placing it well clear of all rivals. HBO Max finished second with five awards spread across four programs, including Hacks, The Pitt, DTF St Louis and Task. Netflix claimed three, including the historic double for Rhys and Field's win for Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Across 19 competitive awards — plus the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award presented to Michael J. Fox — the ceremony ran for just over two hours. With a second season of Widow's Bay confirmed, the island's cursed story appears far from over.
